To Draft or Not to Draft: Daunte Culpepper
Everyone loves an underdog. It's a statement that, despite our cynicism, we here at TJI Fantasy Sports cannot disagree with. So we turn our attention to perhaps the biggest underdog of the upcoming NFL season, Raiders QB Daunte Culpepper.
We were really pulling for Daunte in Miami. He seemed to be the perfect fit for a team seeking an heir to one of the greatest of all time, Dan Marino. Alas, it wasn't meant to be, as Culpepper's injured knee kept him on IR for all but the first four games. Now, with almost two years between Culpepper and his last quality game, he's taking a shot at winning the job in Oakland.
They wouldn't bring him in if he didn't have a shot, right? Josh McCown is certainly capable of keeping the QB's seat warm for 8 games before JaMarcus Russell is ready. Something is afoot in Raider Nation and TJI thinks that it's time to pull for Daunte once again. How great would it be to see #8 throwing TD bombs like it was 2004 again?
While we agree that it would be the story of the year in the NFL for Culpepper to rise from the ashes, at this point it seems less than likely. All the kings horses and all the kings men might not be able to put Daunte's knee together again. And furthermore, the Raiders aren't exactly an offensive juggarnaut.
What's working in Daunte's favor, then? McCown's unimpressive track record certainly helps. As does Russell's extended holdout. Plus if the Raiders want to keep those scary guys in the Black Hole at bay, they need to put up some W's this year. You know the freaks we're talking about. The ones that look like they could eat baby-faced coach Lane Kiffin for breakfast and still be hungry.
But we digress. We need to boil it down to a simple yes or no for our devoted readers. The verdict? Yes. But only as a late-round flyer. We would definitely take a shot on Daunte over a back up kicker or tight end. What's the worst that could happen? You drop him in week two? Now think about the best case scenario: Daunte returns to form; you look like a genius; and at the very least he subs for your QB1 during his bye week. Or he lands you that stud WR you need in a trade.
So, if you're the kind of player that drafts 3 QB, give Culpepper a chance. In the 13th or 14th round, he's really a low-risk/high-reward player. There really isn't any other player out there with his pedigree or track record that you're going to be able to pick up so late in your draft. Take a chance on D.C. You know you want to!
